Purple Martins

The Purple Martin is the largest North American swallow. Every year Purple Martin landlords look forward to their return. Purple Martins are the only bird that relies on man-made housing, so it is very important to have their houses ready when they return in spring.

They are social birds and band together in colonies. Their houses are “apartment buildings” to accommodate many residents. We offer many Purple Martin houses here at Birds Choice.

The males are a deep blue-black and the females are blue-black with gray and white. Purple Martins eat and drink in flight, consuming many insects. Landlords do not feed Purple Martins but must be diligent in keeping sparrows and starlings from nesting in their houses. Weekly inspections are required and the Purple Martins don’t mind.
